When the Alliance of Women Appear in Fashion

The Alliance of Five Ukrainian Woman Fashion Designers Coming Together.

It’s not that often that we hear of a collaboration of five women in the fashion industry. Sometimes we don’t hear about women at the top positions in fashion at all. Chereshnivska, Grie, Nadya Dzyak, Sayya, and Tamar Keburia break the contradiction of women’s disappearance in fashion.

The coming together is not merely a union of talent and creativity, but a powerful force that exemplifies the essence of unity, sustainability, and the promotion of women in higher positions within the fashion industry. Delving into the insights shared by each of these visionary designers and exploring their collective journey towards shaping a more inclusive future in fashion.

Their most recent alliance came about at their showroom presentation at the Paris Fashion Week in September of 2023. Each of them presented at the VETEMAZE showroom with the intention of shining the light on the partnership, mentioning the current Ukrainian socio-economic challenges through the lens of fashion and culture.

The event was supported by the USAID Competitive Economy Program in Ukrainian ( USAID CEP).

“The importance of alliances in my life cannot be overstated. They are my second family. We are an incredible team that I can always rely on, and that will always support me. We share experiences, and contacts, discuss new collections, give advice, and provide constructive criticism when needed,” stated Alisa Grishaeva, owner of GRIE

This alliance goes beyond business: it’s a type of testament to the strength of women working together to uplift each other and the industry as a whole. From market penetration to sharing industry contacts, offering advice, and even acting as a second family, these collaborations have helped these brands navigate the fashion industry and achieve their goals.

This collaborative team has fostered a deep and supportive friendship among the designers, reinforcing the idea that “You are not alone,” said Chereshnivska. The same five women are the founders of UWFIA (Ukrainian Women’s Fashion Industry Alliance). UWFIA manifests the support of women in the fashion industry, prioritising female leadership. Through UWFIA, these five women are not just making “fashion”; they are also making a statement regarding the inclusivity and equitable future for the entire fashion industry.
The lack of women in higher positions within the fashion industry is a pressing issue, but this alliance of women designers is determined to be part of the solution. The alliance has demonstrated that unity and support among women in the fashion industry can lead to greater success.

The interview with the five designers consisted of six questions regarding their brand, women in fashion and creative possibilities:

– Can you speak about your brand and the philosophy?

At our core, we believe that the intersection of design, artistry, and sustainability is where true fashion value lies. We’re committed to offering designs that are not only unique but also produced in minimal quantities. Our pledge is that by 2024, at least 50% of our production will be sourced from recycled materials. Our philosophy doesn’t stop at design; it permeates every aspect of our brand, from production to marketing and collaborations. Sustainability is paramount to us, and we achieve this by exclusively using organic, recycled, vintage, and old-stock fabrics in our creations. Additionally, we actively up-cycle second-hand items, such as jeans, jackets, and shirts, and employ traditional techniques throughout our collection. Each garment is crafted by a single tailor from start to finish, ensuring quality and attention to detail. Inclusivity and diversity are fundamental values for us, reflected in the fact that most of our garments are unisex, and we offer a made-to-measure option at no extra cost. Our brand is more than just clothing; it’s a commitment to shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for fashion.

– When a woman/client wears your clothing, how do you want her/them to feel?

We see our client as confident, catching the attention of passersby. Her appeal lies in the details of her outfit, whether it’s an unusual cut, a unique print, or a vibrant accessory. Above all, we emphasize individuality, valuing each distinctive feature.

– How did this woman alliance support you in your work life?

The women’s alliance has been a tremendous source of support in my professional life. We offer each other various forms of assistance, spanning both business and personal aspects. In the relatively short time we’ve spent together, they have played a pivotal role in helping us penetrate two new markets. They’ve also generously shared valuable industry contacts and provided feedback on our collections. Our alliance’s motto, “You are not alone,” perfectly encapsulates the essence of our partnership, which has grown into a deep and supportive friendship.

– What do you think of the lack of women in higher positions in the fashion industry?

The absence of women in prominent roles within the fashion industry is an issue that’s gradually changing. We are currently at a critical juncture where we’re observing a rising presence of women both in the fashion sector and in politics. This trend is gaining momentum, with widespread discussions and a growing sense of unity among women to accelerate progress. As an alliance, we view our role as providing support to other women, with the hope that our efforts will contribute to further advancing women into higher positions within the fashion industry.

– To all those upcoming fashion designers or creatives who are struggling to get into the bubble of the fashion industry, what would you tell them?

For all aspiring fashion designers or creative individuals who are facing challenges entering the fashion industry, I would emphasize the importance of maintaining your unique identity. Seek out a community of like-minded individuals who can provide support and boost your self-confidence. Most importantly, never give up. Keep pushing forward!

– What’s next for your brand, or what should we be looking out for?

We’re building on the insights gained from the last season as we move forward. Our commitment to expanding our sustainable line remains a top priority, with an increased focus on enhancing product quality. Excitingly, we have plans to showcase our collection during both Copenhagen Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week 2024. Through these events, we aim to draw greater attention to our creations and further contribute to the growth of the sustainable fashion segment.

– Can you speak about your brand and the philosophy?

Sewing bags, I continue a family tradition – my mother is a designer too. In the post-Soviet space, this is a rarity, so it was important for me to carry on my mother’s legacy. It’s also challenging to pursue something else when instead of children’s books, you have glossy magazines, and instead of toys, you have fabric scraps. Grie’s philosophy is to create enduring pieces that can be passed down through generations. That’s why the design of my bags is understated and not overloaded with details, and all Grie bags come with a lifetime service guarantee. We take responsibility for what we create because the world is already filled with disposable items.

– When a woman/client wears your clothing, how do you want her/them to feel?

I am inspired by women, and I would like Grie bags to be enchanting artefacts for them, enhancing their confidence in any situation.

– How did this woman alliance support you in your work life?

The importance of alliances in my life cannot be overstated. They are my second family. We are an incredible team that I can always rely on, and that will always support me. We share experiences, contacts, discuss new collections, give advice, and provide constructive criticism when needed.

– What do you think of the lack of women in higher positions in the fashion industry?

I believe the underrepresentation of women in higher positions within the fashion industry is a critical issue that needs urgent attention. While progress has been made, there is still a long way to go in breaking down gender barriers and empowering more women to lead and shape the industry’s future.

– To all those upcoming fashion designers or creatives who are struggling to get into the bubble of the fashion industry, what would you tell them?

I would advise all aspiring fashion designers and creatives who are facing challenges in entering the fashion industry to hold onto their belief in their craft and maintain unwavering dedication to their goals. In this competitive field, perseverance and a steadfast commitment to honing your skills are paramount to achieving success.

– What’s next for your brand, or what should we be looking out for?

In our plans, we aim to produce new conscious collections, involving Ukrainian artisans and creating new job opportunities. The Grie brand will expand its product line by introducing small accessories such as wallets, belts, and jewellery to our collections. Additionally, I dream of establishing an educational institution in Ukraine where young individuals can receive high-quality and relevant education to excel in the fashion industry.

NADYA DZYAK

– Can you speak about your brand and the philosophy?

Making clothes – it’s a deal of my life. I started making clothes in early childhood. When at the age of 7 my dad gave me a children’s sewing machine. From that moment I realized that I can make special clothes that attract attention and give special emotions. The indisputable favourites are the ethereal, weightless translucent dresses adorned with pleated ruffles—these iconic pieces have solidified the brand’s global renown. In line with its commitment to promoting Ukrainian craftsmanship, NADYA DZYAK places a strong emphasis on the meticulous artistry of hand-laid pleats and ruffles—a reflection of its core DNA. Another hallmark of NADYA DZYAK’s design is the creation of an illusion of weightlessness and optical effects, achieved through the artful use of translucent fabrics.

– When a woman/client wears your clothing, how do you want her/them to feel?

The mission of our brand is to make women happier with their outfits. We really believe that our dresses give confidence to women.

NADYA DZYAK’s collections embody the essence of feminine strength, instilling women with confidence and igniting their inner vitality.

– How did this woman alliance support you in your work life?

I am so glad that I met sincere wonderful people – super women designers, sincere, honest, passionate about their work, women who love, appreciate and respect their teams. We were united by values. Together we are stronger. In just a few months of our collaboration, we have provided each other with invaluable assistance in finding new employees, suppliers, sales channels, and business contacts. This coordinated teamwork proved that the unity of like-minded people yields incredible results and amplifies each other’s voices. Together we solve any issues and problems related to our business and share our experience.

– What do you think of the lack of women in higher positions in the fashion industry?

Women are strong, we have already proven it. Women have absolutely every right to occupy high positions in the fashion industry. Our Alliance supports women. We believe that gender discrimination will gradually disappear, and women will seek to expand their rights. Our alliance will contribute to this as much as possible through its activities.

– To all those upcoming fashion designers or creatives who are struggling to get into the bubble of the fashion industry, what would you tell them?

Follow your dreams, never give up, don’t give up if things don’t work out. Tell everyone as much as possible about yourself, and don’t be silent, this is not an industry of modest people. Be sure to find like-minded people and a support team. Believe in your product, find and crystallize your DNA so that you can be recognized by your handwriting.

– What’s next for your brand, or what should we be looking out for?

We will be true to ourselves, we will continue to make women happy with our products. We will develop the brand and develop International distribution so that as many women around the world as possible can feel the energy of NADYA DZYAK. Will be making a new FW25 collection in the near future. In our global plans to develop the direction of object design, we realized that our products can make people happy through clothing and through space decoration.

SAYYA:

– Can you speak about your brand and the philosophy?

Creating collections is a kind of manifesto for women for me. emphasize strength and spirit, the possibilities of girls are limitless, and a woman feeling beautiful is capable of doing incredible things.

– When a woman/client wears your clothing, how do you want her/them to feel?

Unique. SAYYA collections are out of trend; from season to season they can be easily combined with each other, giving the SAYYA girl self-confidence

– How did this woman alliance support you in your work life?

Support. In the fashion world it’s hard to find friends, partners, I would even say family

Most likely, I wouldn’t be able to organize a showroom in Paris now on my own, but together we were able to do this and more

– What do you think of the lack of women in higher positions in the fashion industry?

I don’t think it’s fair. A woman knows like no one what a woman needs. Men more often see us as art objects, without thinking about comfort, about our social and internal states. For me, clothing is not a situational trend, it’s about the depth of women’s inner world. unfortunately, the world wants more spectacle than practicality

– To all those upcoming fashion designers or creatives who are struggling to get into the bubble of the fashion industry, what would you tell them?

Practice and work. Don’t rush to open your brands, learn from stronger ones, this will shorten the path through mistakes.

– What’s next for your brand, or what should we be looking out for?

SAYYA will definitely push boundaries, experiment more and be bolder.

TAMAR KEBURIA:

– Can you speak about your brand and the philosophy?

My journey into the world of fashion began as a childhood dream, and I finally decided to pursue it at the age of 35. I’ve always been fascinated by how clothing can empower women and express their individuality, whether consciously or subconsciously. Our brand, TAMAR KEBURIA, is often referred to as “Intellectual Fashion.”

– When a woman/client wears your clothing, how do you want her/them to feel?

We do contemporary chic for urban queens, as we believe every woman should feel herself one. We are against objectifying women’s bodies and self-esteem united with self-dignity and creativity are the most important emotional outcomes for our women.

– How did this woman alliance support you in your work life?

Collaborating with the Women’s Alliance has been a truly enriching experience. It’s incredible how the expertise of five different individuals and businesses can strengthen our own. We provide unwavering support to each other at every step, and our bond provides positive energy to all involved.

– What do you think of the lack of women in higher positions in the fashion industry?

The underrepresentation of women in top positions within the fashion industry is not unique to our field but is a widespread issue across industries. I truly believe that no individual should be evaluated because of gender but only because of expertise and vision. But we are going in that direction. Very slowly. Sometimes reverse. Sometimes forward. But we are moving.

– To all those upcoming fashion designers or creatives who are struggling to get into the bubble of the fashion industry, what would you tell them?

The world doesn’t need one more fashion designer. The world doesn’t need more clothes. The world needs more stories and ideas. Make sure your ideas touch people’s hearts. Invent something. Invent something great that our future generations will use. Go creative. Don’t do one more cashmere sweater. Thank you

– What’s next for your brand, or what should we be looking out for?

Our brand’s future is all about pushing the boundaries of creativity and exploring new textures and shapes. We are committed to finding sustainable materials and techniques, and you can expect to see upcycled items gradually introduced into our collections. In 2024-2025, we will have a strong focus on accessories, so stay tuned for exciting developments in that area.
